What do you do with a pile of drawing books, paintings, jitters from a gloomy time… For the past few months I have been trying to give them a place in a short animation film. Moving scraps of paper millimetre by millimetre across a sheet of paper, hovering over my paintings with a fully zoomed-in lens, fiddling, fumbling, trying to turn something so dark into something beautiful? The result is a 20-minute film in which I take you into the timelessness, the chaos, the elusiveness of that period. Together with percussionist Yves Goemaere, I create a live soundtrack that moves along with the images. (Marieke Berendsen)
